Atonement Review
Atonement is a story of love, war and effect one lie can have a man's life. The story
focuses on James McAvoy a young man who works for the family of Keira Knightly.
The two have a passionate moment which is witnessed by her young sister. When
another child is then attacked the younger sister accuses James McAvoy. After
being framed he faces life imprisonment or fighting for his country. This a passionate
story line that could reduce some to tears.
Keira Knightly makes a rare appearance in this rather dreary film. There is also an
appearance from the new star in Hollywood, James McAvoy. This film is ok but relies
too heavily on the story. It takes what seems like an age for the scene to be set and
for something to happen. The main letdown of Atonement is the serious lack of
action from beginning to end. There are clever cinematic techniques and there are a
few twists along the way but not enough to keep me entertained and parts of the plot
are very predictable.
James McAvoy and Kiera Knightly both give decent performances but whether they
deserve an Oscar or not is another thing. The dialogue between the two characters
is intelligent and convincing but offers nothing spectacular. Of the two, James
McAvoy gives the better performance.
I found Atonement too slow to get going. I know it is a drama and it was building the
suspense and setting the scene but it still left me bored for most of it. There needed
to be more action or something to keep the audience interested in the early stages. I
was somewhat frustrated at the influence a little girl seemed to have on the fate of a
grown man. Nevertheless, the story itself is well thought out even if it is boring.
Despite its billing Keira Knightly does not get naked but there are some quite graphic
sexual references that may offend some viewers. There is some humour and there is
a funny cameo from a soldier that James McAvoy meets. However, the film was too
dismal and depressing for me! Despite the glowing reviews from some critics I would
not recommend this film and I would not suggest buying it on DVD.
Atonement
Certificate: 15
Genre: Drama
Who's in it: Keira Knightly and James McAvoy
Chris' Verdict on Atonement: 6/10- "Dreary film. Firstly, Kiera Knightly does
not get naked in this film and secondly I really wish Kiera Knightly would play
more roles where she is happy rather than depressed. The film is too dreary
and dull for me."
Ellie's Verdict: 6/10- ”Depressing film. I normally enjoy dramas but most films
of this genre tend to have something to uplift you at the end. Instead
Atonement left me depressed from start to finish."
