| I Am Legend DVD Review This is probably the most hyped film of the year and arguably has the most interesting trailer. The film appears to be a more realistic version of the Resident Evil series. The plot revolves around a Dr Neville who is the last man surviving in New York City and the whole world for that matter. He has remained in the city in order to try and a find a cure for the deadly virus responsible for the death of 90% of the population and the majority of the rest turned into flesh eating monsters. We see the loneliness he suffers and the desolation of a once thriving city. The doctor goes through painstakingly methodical processes to ensure he survives and to stop the creatures from finding his whereabouts. The film tries to explain why the situation is how it is through a number of flashbacks although it is difficult to actually work out how the miracle cure to cancer had managed to turn into a deadly virus. Through the flashbacks we learn the fate of the family and the important role that the doctor played in finding a cure for the disease. There was little dialogue in this film which results in large periods of monotonous silence at times. There is some humorous dialogue between Dr Neville and his dog. The special effects are brilliant in particular the scenes with the animals. The closing scenes were full of fantastic action and it is a shame that the rest of the film was not the same. The trailer suggests a film of action and suspense. There is too much suspense with very little action other than Will Smith playing golf, hunting deer and collecting his crops. Admittedly certain aspects of the plot are unbelievable but that is to be expected from a film of this genre. Will Smith is good despite the ailing plot. It seems that Will Smith is continuing his trend of films showing his muscles and him battling against the world. There was humour in places, in particular in his dialogue with cardboard cut outs. Large numbers of the audience were so bored they left before the end. Ultimately, this film had the potential to be good but was too slow, lacked dialogue, painfully dull in places and not worth the ticket price. |
