| Burn After Reading DVD Review Burn After Reading is a combination of a number of mini sub-plots that eventually all join together to make one large humorous plot. Due to the Coen brother's growing fame and undoubted talent, they have been able to attract an all-star cast including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich and Tilda Swinton. Each character has their own part to play. Their lives are joined by deceit, lies and adultery. George Clooney's character, seems to be the biggest adulterer who always has the feeling that he is being followed. While John Malkovich plays a recently sacked government worker who has decided to retire to write his memoirs. In stark contrast, Brad Pitt is a hyper gym instructor, who becomes involved in more than he can handle. I may not go into depth and explain the plot because to be honest even after watching the film, I am not exactly sure what was happening. However, for me that was an endearing characteristic but it may be slightly annoying to some viewers. Moreover, the humour is tailored to an adult audience. The few younger people that were in the audience did not seem to laugh and seemed distinctively unimpressed at less than subtle references to the humorous inadequacies of the American government. Despite the humour, of which there was plenty, the film still lacked a certain something and did not reach the same heights that I had expected. This feeling of disappointment was made worse by the quite abrupt and frankly terrible ending. As you might expect from a film with a good cast, the acting was good from start to finish with particularly good performances from Brad Pitt and John Malkovich, who have an amusing meeting. Those of you hoping for a Brad Pitt, George Clooney relationship like that of the Ocean films will be disappointed. The one meeting between their two respective characters lasts for around 10 seconds. I think with such a good cast, with a slightly better script, this film could have been much more enjoyable. Overall, despite some negative points, I still really enjoyed Burn After Reading but I would only recommend going to see it for certain people. For those of you, like me, who quite enjoy a slightly mad and crazy plot that has little rhyme or reason then like me, you will enjoy Burn After Reading. The whole cast provide good performances but unless you find the type of humour funny then you will not enjoy the film and it is not worth you going to see it. |
