Never Back Down Review

Never Back Down is the latest fighting film to hit the screens. As usual in films of this
genre, it is the story of the underdog. In this case the underdog is Jake Tyler who
has to overcome his anger and take control of his life after moving to Orlando, in
order to succeed. As usual there is the guy he wants to beat and a master like figure
who acts as his mentor and helps him train to beat the best.

Firstly, I would like to say that this film is one of the most violent films I have seen this
year. If I was not for Rambo this film might indeed me number one. There are a
number of scenes where the fighters are repeatedly pounded into submission.
Indeed, one guy even ends up in a hospital though I am not going to say anymore for
fear of ruining the plot.

Jake played by Sean Faris gives a decent performance albeit his role as an actor is
not that demanding. However, it is impressive the shape he and his opponent
manage to get into. The one thing I would say is that the fighters are both at school
and yet seem to be training night and day, in particular Jake. Djimon Hounson is
other big name to make an appearance and he to looks in excellent shape and ready
to kill someone with his bare hands. I am a little disappointed that Djimon never
actually has a proper fight because I would have paid to see that. Jake’s little bother
Charlie, who is a budding tennis pro, has some funny lines which helps to break up
the bits of the film without fighting.

It was worried about ‘Never Back Down’ being boring and predictable. I was right
about the predictability but by no means was this film boring for me. The fight scenes
were good and the training was excellent and original. I might even try a few of the
routines myself. The film tried to introduce an actual story rather than mindless
violence, which sets this film apart from others of its kind. Nevertheless, if fighting
films are not your thing then you will not enjoy this film because the best bits are the
fight scenes. Point to note, it only takes about 30 minutes before Never Back Down is
said.

Overall, I am glad I went to see this film and a lot of what I thought might let the film
down did not. The plot was ok despite being predictable and having some flaws. The
fighting was excellent but could be a bit excessive for some viewers. At times people
are repeatedly hit in the head until they are no longer awake. The actors are unlikely
to appear in anything else then other teenage fight movies. If you loved Rocky then
you will love this film to. If you like films of this genre you will love Never Back Down.
